Burlington County

Burlington County’s early history is connected with West Jersey and the later formation of the united Province of New Jersey. The county originally covered a much larger area before divisions created other jurisdictions. Burlington first served as the county seat, but government moved to Mount Holly in 1793 as the population spread inland. That relocation captures an important shift from a river-centered colonial settlement pattern toward a broader network of communities across the interior.

Mount Holly gives the county a civic center, while waterways such as Rancocas Creek help organize the surrounding landscape. Much of Burlington County consists of low-relief coastal plain, streams, and wetlands rather than steep terrain. River communities and inland places consequently offer different settings within the same county. Looking beyond one town makes the county’s scale more apparent, especially when comparing the Delaware River side with areas farther into the interior.
